Edison Mission Group (EMG), a subsidiary of Edison International, announced today that it has finalized an agreement to acquire the 161-megawatt (MW) Wildorado Wind Ranch™ located in the panhandle of northern Texas.
EMG purchased the project from Cielo Wind Power, LP, a leading Texas-based, wind generation developer, which will retain a minority interest. Upon completion of construction, the electricity produced by Wildorado will be sold to Southwestern Public Service, a subsidiary of Xcel Energy, under a long-term power purchase agreement.
“Edison Mission Group continues to build a significant wind energy portfolio across the country,” said EMG CEO Ted Craver. “The Wildorado project will provide Texas with a valuable new source of environmentally friendly electricity. In this time of rising energy costs, it is especially important that we develop both new capacity and more diversity in our energy supply.”
The project will include 70 turbines. Construction will begin in the spring of 2006, with commercial operations expected in early 2007.
With the acquisition of Wildorado, EMG has a national wind portfolio of 477 megawatts (MW) at 10 sites in Iowa, Minnesota, New Mexico and Texas. In addition, EMG is working with local developers to permit a 90 MW project in Maine, and has entered into a joint development agreement that is expected to result in several new projects with Midwest Wind Energy of Chicago.
