Electrifying the economy with clean power is California’s most effective tool to rapidly reduce carbon emissions that drive climate change. Edison International sees a future with lower energy costs, reduced risk of climate disasters and their associated expense, and cleaner air — all of which contribute to public health and longevity.
Since clean electricity is crucial for nearly all sectors to reach net zero, the success of California’s climate goals depends on close cooperation with its utilities. Infrastructure challenges, climate impacts, and technological and policy gaps threaten the feasibility of economywide decarbonization. Even so, with cross-sector collaboration, new grid efficiencies and necessary investment in renewables, storage and clean firm generation, we believe this carbon-free future is still within reach.
Reaching Net Zero details Edison International’s plan to reach net zero and support California’s climate goals, building on previous analysis. It identifies risks and opportunities for California’s electric sector transformation through robust scenario analysis and outlines our ongoing actions to ensure a safe, reliable and affordable clean energy transition.
NET-ZERO ACTION PLAN
Greenhouse gas emissions from delivering power to SCE’s customers make up the overwhelming majority of Edison International’s emissions, which are forecast to be reduced by 95% between 2005 and 2045. To address operational emissions, SCE is engaging vendors to reduce supply chain emissions, phasing out older technology and continuing to electrify its vehicle fleet, among other actions.
SCENARIO ANALYSIS
We analyzed “challenge scenarios" to see how higher demand, delayed deployment of emerging clean firm technology and a combination of the two could impact future emissions and power-mix implications. By understanding potential challenges, we can better identify risks, prioritize investments and proactively plan for grid infrastructure needs.
