Brian Barrios is vice president of Cybersecurity and IT Compliance at Southern California Edison, one of the nation’s largest electric utilities. He leads the company’s enterprise cybersecurity strategy, including advanced threat identification, protection, outreach and response capabilities. He also oversees SCE’s cybersecurity risk mitigation strategies and manages information technology compliance and business continuity planning efforts.
Most recently, Barrios was executive director of IT Security for Southern Company, where he was responsible for protecting the company from cyber compromises across its portfolio.
Previously, Barrios worked for the not-for-profit MITRE Corporation, where he led the nation’s first and only national lab dedicated to cybersecurity, the National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence, within the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). His work there included the creation of the first eight NIST Special Publication 1800 series documents, Cybersecurity Practice Guides, targeted to various industries, including multiple guides dedicated to electric utilities.
Barrios formerly led an organization embedded in the FBI’s Cyber Division, specializing in cyber counterintelligence matters. In this role, he established the National Cyber Investigative Joint Task Force, coordinated numerous large-scale incident response teams, created a security operations center and led the technical aspects of multiple global takedowns.
Earlier in his career, Barrios worked at AOL as postmaster within its Mail Operations, which specifically focused on anti-spamming efforts.
Barrios earned a bachelor's degree in computer information systems from Clemson University and is a Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP).
