Big Test for Distributed Energy

SCE’s pilot tests whether Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) can perform in a real world environment with the same reliability as traditional power plants.

Can Renewable Energy & Cleaner Resources Help Lessen the Need for New Power Plants?

The Preferred Resources Pilot (PRP) is our utility’s multi-year study designed to determine whether clean-energy resources can be acquired and deployed to offset the increasing customer demand for electricity in central Orange County, Calif. Proving the capabilities of preferred resources may defer or eliminate the need for new gas-fired generation in the PRP region.

The pilot aims to identify the right mix of "preferred" electricity sources that will enable SCE to maintain system reliability and power affordability with less dependence on fossil fuels. Preferred sources include cleaner solar and wind power, along with utility programs that manage demand and encourage energy efficiency.

This SCE pilot takes place in a region of Southern California that encompasses a large part of the cities of Irvine, Tustin, Santa Ana, and Newport Beach, as well as all or parts of the cities of Aliso Viejo, Corona del Mar, Costa Mesa, Laguna Beach, Laguna Woods, Laguna Hills, Laguna Niguel, Lake Forest, and Mission Viejo. The area is home to approximately 204,000 SCE residential customers and 30,000 SCE commercial and industrial customers.

In this real-world experiment, we're exploring how cleaner energy resources can help maintain electric service reliability in a densely populated area.

Looking for a Letter of Support or Commitment?

Our utility, Southern California Edison, collaborates with many organizations to support innovation in the areas of renewable sources of energy, grid optimization, and energy storage. If you are working on a project of this nature and need a letter of support or commitment for a California Energy Commission EPIC proposal, DOE or other funding source proposal, we may be able to help.
