Going Neutral
Pathway 2045
Pathway 2045 is SCE’s 2019 data-driven analysis of the steps that California must take to meet the 2045 goals to clean our electricity grid and reach carbon neutrality.

The Clean Power and Electrification Pathway
In 2017, SCE published an analysis of steps that would be needed to meet California’s interim 2030 goals. This study is foundational to Pathway 2045.

How We Get There
Pathway 2045 concludes that reaching California’s 2045 greenhouse gas goals requires a near-complete transformation of how the state sources and uses energy across all sectors of the economy.
![decarbonize electricity](https://s3.amazonaws.com/cms.ipressroom.com/406/files/20229/pathway-2045-decarbonize.png)
- 100% of retail sales from carbon-free electricity
- 50% of single-family homes have solar panels
- 3x increase in clean energy generation capacity

- 26 million EVs
- 1 million + electrified medium and heavy duty vehicles
- 1/3 of the energy on the grid is used to power electric vehicles
![electrify buildings](https://s3.amazonaws.com/cms.ipressroom.com/406/files/20229/pathway-2045-electrify-buildings.png)
- 70% of all buildings will use efficient electric space and water heating
- 90% fewer GHG emissions from all-electric homes
- 15% increase in total electrical load
![use low carbon fuels](https://s3.amazonaws.com/cms.ipressroom.com/406/files/20229/pathway-2045-low-carbon.png)
- 50% reduction in natural gas consumption
- 40% of the remaining natural gas is biomethane and hydrogen
- 20% of heavy-duty trucks are powered by hydrogen

Carbon sequestration, which is the process of removing carbon from the atmosphere using biological or physical means, is used to zero out remaining carbon produced in California
